Nathan took me to the symphony this past Thursday. I wore a simple black dress and Nathan wore a black suit with a pinstripe shirt and white tie. He looked so handsome.
I waited for him at the Foggy Bottom metro stop and while I waited I finished up a difficult Sudoku puzzle. He approached me which a little yellow rose he picked up from the garden.
As we moved briskly through the cool of the evening toward the Kennedy Center I thought about how many people have enjoyed going to the symphony over the years and how we would soon participate in this rich musical tradition.
The program was:
Weiner - Serenade, Op.3
Haydn - Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major
Rachmaninoff - Symphony No. 2 in E minor Op. 27
I’ve never listened to Weiner’s Serenade before but it was lovely. The cellist that performed the Haydn piece was Steven Isserlis. He is an amazing musician and one of the most renown cellists of our time. I did some research on him and found that he is using not one, but two Stradivariuses this year. He was not only technically proficient, but played with such wit and feeling. The last piece the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) played was Symphony No. 2 in E minor by Rachmaninoff. I am a huge fan of Rachmaninoff’s work. His music moves me like no other. The third movement was magnificent. Every note oozed romanticism.
Nathan and I had a wonderful night. I hope we’ll get a change to see the NSO again soon.
